The River Forecast Centre has issued a High Streamflow Advisory for the Skeena River and tributaries around Terrace and Kitsumkalum as warm temperatures and rapid snowmelt continue to raise river levels across northwest B.C.
Terrace has been placed under a high avalanche warning following a weekend winter storm that brought heavy snow, rain and unstable conditions to the region.
Heavy flurries are expected to impact Terrace and Kitimat through Friday afternoon, with sudden reductions in visibility possible during intense bursts. Environment Canada is warning travellers to prepare for rapidly changing conditions on Highways 16 and 37.
Terrace set a new daily temperature record on January 13, reaching 9.6°C and surpassing a mark that had stood since 1933, following an unusually warm weather pattern after a recent atmospheric river.
A winter storm is expected to bring up to 35 centimetres of snow to inland areas along Highway 37 near Kitimat this weekend, with hazardous travel conditions possible across the North Coast.
Terrace woke up to a record-breaking chill on October 14 as temperatures fell to –2.8°C, the coldest ever recorded for that date. According to Environment Canada, the previous record of –2.2°C was set in 1930.
The B.C. RCMP has released the names of six children and two women killed in this week’s shooting in Tumbler Ridge, as the small northeastern community continues to mourn.
