Funding approved for demolition of former bowling alley

The former Terrace Bowling Alley is one step closer to being cleared off the site after the fire destroyed the building last month.

The City of Terrace has approved $110,000 in funding to help finance the demolition and remediation process

The bowling alley was heavily damaged in a fire on May 21 and has been deemed beyond repair.

The first phase of work will focus on removing the damaged structure as well as asbestos and lead-contaminated material on site.

It is estimated that Phase One will cost around $134,000. It is anticipated that the city will recover some money from its demolition insurance coverage.

Due to the extensive damage caused by the fire, along with the presence of potentially hazardous substances on site, the process of cleanup and remediation is being done in stages. After Phase One of demolition is completed, the condition of the foundation and basement can then be assessed prior to beginning Phase Two.

The second phase of demolition will see the demolition of the concrete foundation, after which they can restore the site.

The funding approval comes less than a week since the Terrace Fire Department announced that the fire was suspicious in nature. The investigators concluded that the fire started from the outside front north corner of the building. There are currently two people of interest being investigated by the RCMP.

For decades, the Terrace Bowling Alley served as a popular gathering place for residents, hosting leagues, family outings and community events.
