Hunters in northwest B.C. can now start applying to the 2026 limited entry hunting draw, with several changes affecting hunting opportunities in the Skeena region.
According to the Province, applications are now open for the draw, which is used by the Province to manage hunting opportunities in areas that exceed the capacity of hunting authorization.
Some of the changes made regarding the 2026-27 season include changes in moose hunting opportunities in the Skeena region, among others concerning species like caribou, mountain sheep, mountain goat, and elk in other parts of the province.
The Province said that these changes are made based on updated information regarding the wildlife populations in these regions as well as public consultation and concerns regarding hunting pressure in certain areas.
Limited entry hunting is commonly practiced in the Skeena region, as it is throughout northern B.C. In addition, hunting moose is among the most common recreational activities enjoyed by hunters not only in Skeena but in the whole of northern B.C.
Applications should be made through the Wildlife Information and Licensing Data system, also known as WILD, by 11:59 p.m. on June 23.
Hunters are required to be B.C. residents, as well as having an active Fish and Wildlife ID to apply.
The Province also reminded that any hunter whose mandatory hunter report or the permit-to-accompany report is past due will not be eligible to apply.
Officials said that the purpose of the limited entry system was to create a balance between recreational hunting activities and wildlife sustainability.
The Province noted successful applicants will have slightly reduced odds in future draws to help improve opportunities for hunters who have previously been unsuccessful.
