Major Métis housing project gains support in Terrace

Terrace City Council has voted to support a significant affordable housing proposal put forward by the Métis Nation of British Columbia that could bring up to 188 new homes to the area.

City council approved a letter of support for the proposal during their meeting on Monday night, supporting the MNBC’s bid for the Build Canada Homes program.

According to information provided to council, the development is proposed for 4617 Greig Avenue and would be a two-phase project with a total of 94 units in each phase. Construction is slated for 2027 for Phase 1 and 2028 for Phase 2, pending funding approval.

City council members were supportive of the proposal, noting the need for more homes in Terrace.

“I think in general, I want to be able to support this,” said Councillor Chris Apps. “I can’t see why that support does make sense. We want to see that area developed.”

Apps said the size of the proposal means more details will likely come forward if funding is approved.

“The project description that’s provided… is quite big. I’m sure there will be lots more questions if they are successful in getting this grant,” he said.

Other councillors said the request aligns with how the city typically approaches affordable housing initiatives.

“I think that we would support this request just like we would other nonprofit housing, affordable housing projects,” said Councillor Brian Downie. “So I have no problem… I support it.”

In its response letter, the City of Terrace explained that the project aligns with the city’s priority needs identified in their 2024 Housing Needs Report, which are increasing the supply of affordable housing and supporting culturally appropriate housing options.

The project can also benefit Métis people, families, Elders, and people with disabilities in terms of housing accessibility.

Although City Council is supportive of the funding request, it is important to note that any future land-use or development decisions would follow the regular decision-making process.
