A community fundraiser supporting vulnerable residents in Terrace is close to raising $40,000 after surpassing its initial goal, according to a city councillor.
During Monday’s city council meeting, Councillor Sarah Zimmerman spoke of the Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser’s success for the ‘Ksan Society.
The Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser for the ‘Ksan Society is their biggest fundraiser of the year. It is a family-friendly walk to raise money for local charities to help those in need of food and shelter in the community.
Money raised helps fund services for people in need at Joe’s Place, which operates beyond its funded capacity, the ’Ksan Residence and Shelter and the Temporary Winter Shelter during the winter months.
The organization also provides food, shelter, and other supports such as advocacy, meals, transportation, clothing, hygiene items, showers, and laundry for those in need in the community.
Zimmerman said the fundraiser had already surpassed its initial goal.
“They were very successful in terms of hoping to raise $30,000. They’re very close to having a $40,000 mark, which is great news for a provider that was raising funds to help offset costs of serving vulnerable people in our community,” she said.
Zimmerman also praised the community turnout for the event.
“There was a great turnout from the community, so I was grateful for that,” she said.
She added that the fundraiser has become one of her favourite annual community events.
“It’s something I’ve done as a councillor ever since we got elected, and it’s one of my favourite events of the year.”
The walk itself took place on Feb. 28, but donations are still being accepted. Organizers say contributions will remain open until March 31.
