The B.C. River Forecast Centre has issued a flood watch for inland areas including Terrace and Kitimat as an atmospheric river brings heavy rain to the region. The watch also covers the North Coast, including tributaries along the outer coast
A flood watch means river levels are rising and are expected to approach or exceed bankfull levels. Flooding may occur in low-lying areas near rivers and streams.
An atmospheric river has been affecting the North and Central Coast of British Columbia through Wednesday night. According to forecast models, moderate to very heavy rain is anticipated across the Terrace-Kitimat area.
Rainfall amounts are expected to range between 80 and 120 millimetres by Wednesday night. In higher-end scenarios, rainfall could exceed 250 millimetres, particularly in Kitimat and areas to the west..
Temperatures are expected to remain warm, with freezing levels reaching 2,000 metres. This may increase runoff from snowmelt at higher elevations, adding to rising river levels in areas such as Terrace and Kitimat.
According to the River Forecast Centre, river and creek levels are forecast to rise today, peak tomorrow and continue into Thursday.
High flows are possible in some areas, especially in smaller watersheds, as a result of heavy rainfall and rain-on-snow events. Possible hazards include fast-moving water, overbank flooding, erosion of riverbanks, washed-out roads and landslides.
Residents are urged to stay away from rivers and streams and be prepared for difficult driving conditions. Drivers should check the DriveBC website for the latest information before heading out and should never drive through floodwaters or attempt to cross washed-out roads.
The River Forecast Centre said the situation is being closely monitored, and further updates will be provided as the weather system moves through the region.
