Caribou kill leads to $5,000 penalty in northern B.C.

A fine of $5,000 has been given to a man from northern B.C., who shot a caribou in a zone that was closed to hunting.

Julian Starr pleaded guilty to violating Section 26(1)(c) of the Wildlife Act.

This case occurred after a remote ATV patrol in the Dease Lake area along the Jade Boulder Road. There, a conservation officer discovered a dead bull caribou.

Of the fine, $4,999 will be donated to the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation. In addition, Julian Starr has to forfeit seized wildlife in his possession.

The B.C. Conservation Officer Service urges hunters to check that they are following all hunting regulations.

The conservation service also thanked the Tahltan Nation for their cooperation with the investigation.
