Visible smoke near Gitanyow possible due to cultural burn

A cultural burn is currently planned about two kilometres south of Gitanyow starting April 22.

It is being done by the BC Wildfire Service in partnership with the Gitanyow First Nation, covering up to 100 hectares of land.

Smoke may be visible along from Highways 16 and 37, Gitanyow, and the Village of Kitwanga.

BC Wildfire Service said the burn is being done to reduce hazardous fuels for community protection, improving wildlife habitat, and increasing edible and medicinal plant productivity.

It added burns will only occur when conditions are suitable and allow for smoke to disperse.
