The River Forecast Centre has updated its advisory to a Flood Warning for Terrace and Kitimat with river levels continuing to rise above bankfull.
The update includes rivers and tributaries to the Skeena River around Terrace, the Kitimat River, and the Kemano River, and their tributaries. A flood warning means water levels have exceeded or are expected to exceed bankfull levels and result in flooding of nearby low-lying land
The change comes after two days of heavy rainfall across the North Coast. Environment and Climate Change Canada reported 98 to 117 millimetres of rain in the Kitimat area, with Terrace receiving about 95 millimetres.
Residents are advised to use extreme caution near creeks and rivers, stay away from running water, and not drive over flooded roads and bridges. Residents are also reminded to clear storm drains of leaves and debris in an effort to reduce the risk of localized flooding.
The Regional District of Kitimat Stikine is reminding everyone to stay alert for changing weather and river levels, as recent rain runoff can continue to maintain high levels during the weekend.
