Flood watch in effect for Terrace and Kitimat

A flood watch is currently in place for both Terrace and Kitimat, and other surrounding areas, as river levels are still on the rise across the region.

The River Forecast Centre issued the warning Wednesday afternoon that Skeena River tributaries near Terrace and Kitsumkalum, as well as North Coast rivers near New Aiyansh, the Nass River, Prince Rupert, and Kitimat, are being monitored closely.

According to the River Forecast Centre, a flood watch means river levels are rising and will reach or potentially exceed bankfull, leading to flooding of nearby low-lying areas. The public is advised to stay away from rivers that are becoming alarmingly high and fast and avoid driving on flooded roadways, bridges, or crossings.

Officials are also reminding residents to clean and check storm drains, as fallen leaves now have the potential to clog drainage and increase the risk of neighborhood flooding.

The Regional District is urging everyone to stay prepared for changing weather and river conditions since runoff and rain have the potential to cause water levels to climb even higher in the coming days.
