Impaired and prohibited driver found asleep in side-by-side in Kitimat

A man is facing multiple charges after Kitimat RCMP found him sleeping behind the wheel of a side-by-side near Nechako Centre earlier this month.

Police said officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle at 12:42 a.m. on Oct. 9. When police arrived, they found a man slumped against the wheel of the off-road vehicle.

The officer woke the man up and began an impaired driving investigation after observing signs of impairment. Police added that the driver had given two breath samples into an approved roadside screening device, both of which came back with a “Fail.” He was also handed a 90-day driving suspension.

Further checks revealed the man did not hold a valid licence and was already under a five-year ban from driving. The man was arrested and taken to the Kitimat RCMP detachment, and was later released on an upcoming court date to be charged with driving prohibited under Section 95 of the Motor Vehicle Act.

The side-by-side was impounded, and the man was issues a violation ticket for failing to have insurance.

RCMP also reminds the public that impaired driving of any vehicle, car, truck, or off-road vehicle, is a very serious offense with very serious consequences, and is a leading cause of preventable deaths on B.C. roads.
