Kitimat RCMP warn of celebrity imposter scam after local senior loses thousands

A Kitimat senior citizen has fallen victim to a celebrity impostor scam that lost him several thousand dollars.

This scam involves an anonymous person posing as a well-known celebrity online, asking the victim for money for charity donations, vacations, concerts, meet and greets, and other business deals.

The victim believed the messages were authentic and sent money over time. Kitimat RCMP said they received the report about this scam on Oct 7 and are now reminding residents to be cautious when dealing with someone on the internet, especially when money gets involved.

Police say scams like this are becoming more and more common as technologies change, with scammers often using methods like fake profiles, photos, and websites to make their stories seem more believable.

The Kitimat RCMP are urging anyone who thinks they may have been scammed to contact the local detachment or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Center.
