A man was sent to the hospital following a severe car accident on Highway 37 that left his vehicle badly damaged.
Police report that the call came in the morning of Sept. 22, after an iPhone crash alert was activated from the 1700 block of the road. As a standard feature, the vehicle automatically alerts the emergency services, allowing officers to arrive at the scene quickly.
Upon arrival, the car was found to be off the road, in a ditch, and into a tree. The driver was already out of the car when the first rescuers came and was subsequently taken to the hospital by paramedics for medical attention.
While the RCMP describe the injuries as non-life-threatening, the accident is a reminder of the rapidly changing conditions this time of year on northern highways. Colder mornings, debris on the road, and unpredictable weather all impact traction as well as visibility, especially in sections outside urban areas, where wildlife must also be considered.
Police remind people to slow down, allow additional time to travel, and ensure their vehicles are prepared for fall and winter driving.
