This past Sunday’s Terrace Terry Fox Run was a complete success, drawing people from across the community to the Xpilaxha Trail, formerly known as the Grand Trunk Trail, to walk, run, and bike in support of the Terry Fox Foundation.
Event organizer Cindy Hall said the day could not have gone any better. The weather was clear, and families turned out in good numbers. The energy around the trail carried the event from registration at noon through the official start at 1:00 p.m.
“It went really well. The weather was fantastic, and we had lots of families participate by walking, running, and biking.”
About 40 people came together, including participants and volunteers. The turnout meant a great deal, as it brought together both longtime supporters and those trying it for the first time. Hall said watching families walk side by side, kids biking with their parents, and familiar faces returning highlighted the spirit of the run.
Alongside the strong attendance, fundraising was another highlight. Between online contributions and donations collected in person at Sunday’s event, a total of $1,240 was raised.
“This year $1,240 was raised. This is between online fundraising efforts and in-person donations.”
While the money raised is important, Hall said it’s the stories behind the run that really capture what keeps the event alive. She recalls watching people who have been part of the run since its earliest days in the 1980s once again step forward this year.
“We’ve had a couple of participants who’ve taken part every year since 1981. We also saw a lot of newcomers to the community come out to learn about Terry Fox and participate in this year’s event.”
Hall said having both longtime participants and newcomers learning about Terry Fox is what will keep the run going strong in the future.
“It was so good to see some old faces who have taken part for years, but more importantly, see some new faces who will help carry on Terry’s legacy, keep this dream alive, and continue with this event for years to come.”
For Hall and for many of those who came out Sunday, the run is not just about the distance covered or the money raised. It’s about remembering the determination of Terry Fox and carrying his dream forward, year after year.
