The Terrace Fire Department is warning of the dangers posed by two recent arson attacks on Kalum Cabs, calling the incidents a “disturbing escalation” that threatens public safety and puts emergency crews at greater risk.
According to the department, deliberate fire-setting near businesses, homes, or public spaces puts lives in danger. Fires can spread rapidly and unpredictably, placing residents and bystanders at risk. These kinds of incidents also strain emergency resources, pulling firefighters away from other critical calls around the city.
Officials noted that arson scenes are especially hazardous, often involving heavy smoke, dangerous materials, and the possible use of accelerants. Firefighters have to work in dangerous and unstable conditions, which makes the job riskier for crews on scene.
The first incident occurred at approximately 2:00 a.m. on Aug. 24, when two Kalum Cabs shuttle buses were destroyed in a fire on the 4400 block of Lakelse Avenue. No one was inside the vehicles, but police believe the fire was set on purpose and that the suspect may have been injured before fleeing on foot.
A second fire occurred at the same location just five days later, at approximately 1:20 a.m. on Aug. 29. Another vehicle was damaged, and police say the suspect in this case is believed to be a woman with blonde or light-coloured hair, wearing black clothing and white shoes.
The fire department thanked members of the public who quickly called in both incidents, saying those early alerts helped prevent further harm. Crews continue to work alongside the RCMP, who are asking anyone with information or CCTV footage from the area to contact Terrace RCMP or the Terrace Fire Department.
