The Terrace RCMP received approximately 224 calls from Aug. 10 to Aug. 16, with unsuccessful vehicle theft, two instances of impaired driving, and a complaint about a drone operating around a rural home being among the week’s notable incidents.
On Aug. 10, early in the morning, police were notified of a man attempting to steal a vehicle from a local car dealership.
The individual had been seen using a pry bar, but he apparently gave up. Police later found him at a local business trying to get past a gate.
The man was charged with mischief and taken to cells while further investigation took place. The case is still open and ongoing.
Then, on Aug. 11, police dealt with six people who failed to appear for scheduled court appearances. While no new charges were approved, warrants were issued for each individual, and police say efforts will be made to locate and arrest them.
A drone-related complaint was reported to police on Aug. 16. A man at a rural property told RCMP he had walked onto his deck and saw a drone hovering approximately five metres away from him. The drone immediately left the area.
The man could neither take any photos nor collect registration data, and he could not track the drone down after it took off.
According to RCMP, drones cannot operate within 30 metres of bystanders or structures where they can seek shelter, according to Remotely Piloted Aircraft System regulations.
The police have advised people seeing any drone operating nearby to remain calm and not to get involved, but to take note of the date, time, location, and features of the drone.
Residents are also encouraged to consider whether the operation raises privacy concerns and report potentially unsafe drone activity.
Two impaired driving incidents were also investigated on Aug. 16.
At approximately 2 a.m., officers conducting patrols near George’s Pub observed a man and woman get into a truck. Police noticed the vehicle had a deficiency and conducted a traffic stop at a nearby gas station.
The driver showed signs of impairment. Two breath samples were obtained, with both resulting in a fail.
An Immediate Roadside Driving Prohibition was given to the man, and the vehicle was impounded
Around 9 p.m. on the same day, a motorcyclist was seen in the parking lot of the Thornhill Pub by patrolling police officers in Thornhill.
Police checks found the registered owner was restricted to driving during daylight hours, required to have a supervisor, and was not permitted to exceed 60 kilometres per hour.
The motorcycle was later seen leaving the parking lot without a supervisor and appeared to be going over 60 kilometres per hour.
The motorcyclist was stopped by the police, and there was reasonable suspicion that the driver was impaired. The driver was tested on a roadside screening device, which indicated that the driver was impaired by alcohol.
The driver was issued an Immediate Roadside Driving Prohibition, and the motorcycle was impounded
Terrace RCMP stated that they remain committed to public safety through proactive enforcement, investigations and community engagement.
