Terrace breaks 36 year old heat record for July 21

Those in the Terrace area faced historic heat Tuesday as the temperature reached 33.1 C, setting a new record that remained unbroken since 1990.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, the preliminary high temperature of 33.1 C set a new record, beating the old July 21 record of 32.5 C set back in 1990.

The record was made at a time when there has been an unusual amount of hot weather due to high pressure developing in northwestern British Columbia. Environment Canada issued a heat warning for Terrace, Kitimat, and nearby regions before the arrival of the hot spell, expecting daytime highs in the lower 30s.

Meteorologists expect temperatures to begin easing later this week as the ridge weakens and a cooling trend moves into the region.
