Terrace among B.C. communities funded for FIFA World Cup events

Terrace is set to join the global excitement of the FIFA World Cup with new provincial funding aimed at bringing events to the community.

The provincial government announced Terrace will receive $20,000 through the 2026 Community Event Support Fund as part of a larger $1.7 million investment supporting 32 communities across B.C.

This funding is meant to support communities in hosting free community events during the FIFA World Cup, which is set to take place from Jun. 11 to Jul. 19.

This means that residents in Terrace can expect to enjoy soccer-themed events, live public viewing parties, and community events celebrating multiculturalism, local talent, and food.

Premier David Eby said the funding is about making sure communities across B.C. can be part of what he called a “once-in-a-generation opportunity.”

“Hosting this tournament is something everyone will remember,” Eby said. “It’s about sharing the love of sport, and the excitement, energy, and pride in hosting the largest single-sport event in the world.”

Tourism, Arts, Culture, and Sport Minister Anne Kang added that the initiative is meant to bring people together while spreading the benefits of the tournament beyond host cities.

“We want people to feel the excitement of the world’s largest single-sport event throughout the province,” Kang said. “This is about ensuring everyone can share in the energy and social benefits of the FIFA World Cup right in their own backyard.”

The funding will go towards various needs, such as hosting live match screenings, performers, security, and promotional activities.

The 32 communities in B.C. are expected to provide a total of 333 combined days of events, which will have a potential attendance of up to a million people.

The project is also a part of a larger tourism strategy by the Province, which hopes to increase this sector and attract more people through events such as the World Cup.
