Snowfall warning issued for Terrace and Kitimat as up to 25 cm expected

A snowfall warning has been issued for parts of northwest British Columbia, including Terrace and Kitimat, according to Environment Canada.

The weather service issued a yellow snowfall warning, stating that snowfall totals of 15 to 25 centimeters are expected before the snow tapers off later this evening.

The snowfall warning has been issued for Highway 37, from Terrace to Kitimat, and Highway 16, from Terrace to Kasiks.

According to Environment Canada, an unstable airmass is producing convective flurries, which can lead to bursts of heavy snowfall. This means snowfall totals may vary greatly depending on the location.

The snowfall may lead to rapidly accumulating snow on roads and sidewalks, as well as sudden reductions in visibility.

Drivers are advised to be prepared for rapidly changing and deteriorating road conditions, particularly along highways in the area where snowfall rates are expected to increase for short periods of time.

According to Environment Canada, the threat of convective flurries is expected to dissipate later this evening as the weather system moves out of the area.

Residents are encouraged to allow extra travel time and use caution when driving or walking as snow continues to accumulate throughout the day.
