Terrace seeks provincial funding to host 2026 World Cup community events

The City of Terrace is applying for provincial funding to host two outdoor community events during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Council has endorsed an application to the Province of British Columbia’s 2026 Community Event Support Fund under Stream 1 of the program. Staff are recommending a request for $21,250, which would cover up to 85 per cent of eligible costs. If approved, the city would contribute $3,750 through existing community programming budgets.

The World Cup runs from June 11 to July 19, 2026. Terrace is proposing two public live viewing events — one during a June playoff match and a larger gathering for the final on July 19.

Soccer’s strong local participation was cited as a key reason for pursuing the funding.

“I want to note that the Terrace Youth Soccer Association has 725 registrants in 2025, which is really incredible when you think of our population,” said Tara Irwin, Director of Parks, Recreation & Culture. “So that’s quite a high participation rate.”

Irwin said the events would go beyond simply screening matches, incorporating youth programming and cultural elements.

“So we’ve connected with TYSA, so we would want to do some drills and maybe some displays of the kids playing soccer and whatnot. So little mini matches,” Irwin said.

“The funding from the province really promotes celebrating multiculturalism and diversity,” she added. “So a big part of their funding… would be for performers.”

Mayor Sean Bujtas voiced strong support for the initiative.

“Soccer is a huge sport in this country… It’s definitely the largest sport in Terrace,” Bujtas said.

If approved, the events would take place outdoors during the tournament period between June 11 and July 19, 2026, with further details to be shared through the city’s regular communication channels.
