Terrace city council has approved supporting a grant application for up to $200,000 to help offset the cost of a major downtown reconstruction project.
During its regular meeting on Monday, Jan. 12, council endorsed a staff recommendation to apply to the Northern Development Initiative Trust Fund through its Main Street Revitalization Capital program in support of the Lakelse Avenue 4600 Block Reconstruction Project.
Director of Development Services David Block told council the city qualifies for the maximum available funding through the program.
“The Main Street Revitalization Capital Grant program, we are eligible for up to $200,000 in that application stream,” Block said.
The Main Street Revitalization Capital program offers grants of up to $200,000 for downtown infrastructure projects. Applications are due Jan. 30, 2026, with a funding decision expected in early April.
Block also noted Terrace has a strong track record of securing this type of funding for downtown improvements.
“We have successfully applied for that funding in the past, when we did the boulevard enhancements on Lakelse Avenue,” he said.
According to a report presented to council, the project has been years in the making, with support from the Terrace Downtown Improvement Association and ongoing work by city staff with property owners and businesses along the 4600 block of Lakelse Avenue.
The project has a provisional budget of $4.79 million in the city’s 2026 capital plan. City staff say the work will replace aging infrastructure, lower maintenance costs, and be added to the city’s long-term asset planning.
Council approved the resolution of support without opposition, completing a required step in the grant application process.
