Atmospheric river brings heavy rain, snow risk to Terrace and Kitimat

Residents in the Terrace and Kitimat area are being advised to prepare for some severe weather for the next couple of days, as a weather system is preparing to make landfall.

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning alongside a special weather statement, forecasting 50 to 100 millimetres of rain for the region from tonight through Saturday morning.

The system is being driven by an incoming atmospheric river, which is expected to bring heavy precipitation to inland sections of the North Coast, including Terrace and Kitimat. Temperatures are expected to be just right at times for precipitation to begin as snow before changing over to rain, with 5 to 15 centimetres of snowfall possible this evening near Terrace and along inland stretches of Highway 16 and Highway 37.

Freezing rain is also a risk for Terrace on Friday morning, which could potentially make highway travel dangerous. Environment Canada said water may pool on some roads and in other low-lying areas as rainfall begins to intensify. There is also a risk of washout near rivers, creeks, and culverts.

The strongest winds are expected along the coast, but the system could still cause localized power outages across the North Coast. Drivers are being advised to allow extra time for travel and be ready for quickly changing conditions over the next couple of days.
