Terrace and Kitimat under rainfall warning with 50–70 mm forecast

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Terrace and Kitimat, with 50 millimetres or more of rain expected by tonight and even higher totals possible closer to the coast.

A frontal system moving across the north coast inland sections is bringing “rain, at times heavy” to the region through the day. In Terrace and Kitimat, the heaviest rainfall is expected between this morning and this evening before easing to showers in the wake of the front.

By tonight, at least 50 millimetres of rain is expected to fall in the warning area, with rainfall totals in Kitimat potentially reaching up to 70 millimetres. With that much rain in a short period of time, Environment Canada said drivers and pedestrians should be prepared for water pooling on roads and in low-lying areas, and for visibility to suddenly drop at times in heavier downpours.

The agency is also warning residents to keep an eye on waterways as the rain continues. Heavy rain can lead to rising water levels and localized flooding, and washouts are possible near rivers, creeks and culverts, especially where drainage is poor or debris is blocking ditches and storm drains.

Environment Canada is urging people in the Terrace and Kitimat area to continue monitoring the latest forecasts and alerts as the system moves through.
