Skeena MLA Claire Rattée thanks John Rustad following resignation

It has been a significant week for the Conservative Party of British Columbia following the resignation of party leader John Rustad. His departure has prompted strong reactions within the caucus, including from Skeena MLA Claire Rattée, who said the moment marked an important turning point for the party as it prepares for its next phase of leadership.

Rattée issued a statement Thursday morning, thanking Rustad for his work dedicated to the Conservative Party.

“John has dedicated years of his life to public service,” Rattée said. “He worked tirelessly to bring our party to where it is today and played a pivotal role in our historic growth. For that, he has my respect and my thanks.”

She said Rustad always showed the sacrifice, conviction, and resilience that are expected from a political leader. Rattée spoke on a personal level about their working relationship and how she is still appreciative of the support he gave her over the years.

“While there have been difficult moments, I remain grateful for the work we accomplished together and for the support he has shown me personally.”

Rustad’s resignation came the day after Rattée announced she no longer had confidence in his leadership. She said the decision was not made lightly, but that her responsibility was to the people of Skeena, and required honesty about the challenges facing the caucus.

“This was not a decision I made lightly. John made significant contributions to the conservative movement in British Columbia, and I consider him a friend.
In recent months, it has become abundantly clear that John lost the confidence of the caucus, donors, and many supporters in my riding.” She said.

“My focus remains where it has always been, serving the people of Skeena and fighting for the issues that matter most to families and communities across the North.”

With Rustad now officially stepping aside, Rattée said the party is ready to move forward. She voiced her support for interim leader Trevor Halford, saying he brings “stability and focus” at a critical moment.

Rattée added that the early interest from potential leadership candidates shows the underlying strength of the party and signals optimism about what comes next.

“As we turn the page and move forward, I sincerely wish John every success in whatever comes next,” she said.

“My commitment remains unchanged: to serve the people of Skeena and to fight for the issues that matter most to families and communities across the North.”
