Heavy rainfall warning in effect for Kitimat

A heavy rainfall warning is in effect for Kitimat and parts of the inland north coast.

A major frontal system is expected to bring a significant amount of rain to the region today and possibly into early Friday morning. Environment Canada estimates rainfall amounts between 50 and 70 millimetres.

The rain began earlier this morning and is expected to become heavier throughout the afternoon.

Environment Canada said water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas, posing a risk for drivers in Kitimat. The agency is also advising residents to watch for potential washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts as runoff increases.

The weather agency urges everyone in the area to monitor alerts and updated forecasts as the strong system moves through the region.
